Select architecture students from USC get to live in the house as part of an architect in residence program. Los Angeles is full of beautiful Craftsman houses, but the Gamble House in Pasadena, designed inside and out by brothers Charles and Henry Greene is the cream of the crop. The house was built in 1908 as a summer house for David and Mary Gamble of the Procter and Gamble Company. The house incorporates Japanese elements into a Swiss chalet framework using craftsman techniques. Every detail in the house from the peg wood paneling to the stained glass windows was designed by the brothers, with Charles being responsible for more of the interior details. The purpose of the space and its rotating exhibits is to shine a new, inquisitive light on the design consideration and detail behind everyday items and events.

This exhibition calls attention to products created with genuine verve, fundamental charm, purity, boldness, and strength, each of which we call The Original,’ explained Takahiro Tsuchida. The museum embodies Ando’s signature architectural style, characterized by clean lines, geometric precision, and a focus on spatial experience.

The turquoise finish, terra cotta sunburst over the entrance and the blue glow of the clock tower are all headturners. High-end department stores have dwindled, Westlake is no longer the lap of luxury and the copper turret on the Bullocks Wilshire has since tarnished green—but none of that diminishes the elegance of this Art Deco landmark. It was a department store built for the car, and even though its cash registers have been shut for two decades (now it’s a law school), its poise and strong vertical lines still catch motorists’ eyes. This exhibition employs a tool called "Future Compass" to trigger ideas about the future. We use it to visualize perspectives on a future which is already present today, and which can be uncovered through our contemporary behavior and creativity. We have engaged a range of participants, from designers, artists and thinkers, to engineers and researchers, who provide their own perspectives on the future. These ideas have been generated from the act of pondering timelines, whether familiar or yet unknown.
